Havana

Music is Havana's operating system: son bands in every bar rotation, rumba in the courtyards, salsa orchestras that make sitting down feel rude.

Why go

Music sets the tempo of this city, from son trios working the plazas of the old town to rumba drumming in courtyards and full salsa orchestras in the western suburbs. Around it sits a capital of peeling baroque and neoclassical grandeur, a seafront wall where the whole city comes to sit at dusk, and 1950s American cars kept alive by improvisation. Little of it is polished, which is rather the point.

Four nights lets you get past the obvious and into Vedado and the art scene without exhausting the restaurant supply. Havana pairs naturally with Viñales for tobacco country or Trinidad for colonial streets. It is not a straightforward destination: shortages, power cuts and a confusing money situation are real. Come with patience, cash and low expectations of convenience, and it repays you generously.

From our guides

The essential night is Fábrica de Arte Cubano — a repurposed cooking-oil factory mixing galleries, concerts and dance floors, open Thursday to Sunday only, so plan the week around it. Casa de la Música in Miramar does the big salsa acts; the second, later set is always the one.

Things to do

  1. Habana Vieja

The restored colonial core, with four main squares, a cathedral of hand-carved coral stone and streets where the scaffolding and the splendour sit side by side.

  2. The Malecón

Eight kilometres of sea wall where families, fishermen, musicians and couples gather each evening. On rough days the waves break clean over the road.

  3. Callejón de Hamel

An alley covered in Afro-Cuban murals and sculpture that hosts live rumba on Sunday afternoons. Crowded, informal and the most direct route into the city's African roots.

  4. Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes

The Cuban wing is the surprise of the city, tracking painting from colonial portraiture to the twentieth-century avant-garde. Two hours well spent when the heat peaks.

  5. Fusterlandia

A whole neighbourhood in Jaimanitas remade in mosaic by one artist, with tiled roofs, benches and murals spreading house by house. A taxi ride west of the centre.

  6. Vedado

The leafier twentieth-century district of mansions, cinemas, an enormous cemetery of marble tombs and the university steps. The city's students and nightlife live here.

Getting there

  1. Fly to

    Havana (HAV)

Nearest airport to Havana, about 17km away as the crow flies.

  2. Then

    To Havana

About 30 to 40 minutes by taxi from Jose Marti (HAV) into Havana Vieja or Vedado. Fares are agreed in advance and taxis are the only realistic option from the terminal.

  3. On the ground

    Getting around

Havana Vieja and Centro are walkable and best explored on foot. Between neighbourhoods, notably out to Miramar and the Fabrica de Arte, take a taxi or a shared collectivo along the main avenues.

Public transport: City buses exist but are crowded and opaque to visitors. Shared collectivo cars running fixed routes are the practical local alternative to taxis.

Where to stay

Casas particulares, private rooms and flats in family homes, are the heart of it, alongside restored state-run colonial hotels. Expect no international booking chains and patchy online payment.

  • Best base overall

    Habana Vieja

The restored colonial core puts the plazas, museums and the best casas within walking distance. Streets outside the tourist arteries are crumbling and dimly lit, and water pressure is unpredictable.

  • Best for nightlife

    Vedado

Leafy, spacious and home to Fabrica de Arte and most of the live-music venues, with 1950s apartment blocks converted into characterful casas. It is a long, hot walk to Old Havana.

  • Best value

    Centro Habana

Rooms here cost noticeably less and the street life is the real thing, between the two more polished districts. Buildings are dilapidated and it feels rough after dark.

  • Quietest

    Miramar

Embassy villas, sea breeze and gardens west of the tunnel, where Casa de la Musica does the big salsa acts. You will rely on taxis for everything, and there is little to walk to.

Worth knowing before you book: Bring cash in euros or pounds, since foreign cards often fail. Confirm your casa directly by message a few days before, as double bookings happen.

Good to know

Cash
Bring enough euros or pounds in cash for the whole trip. Cards issued by American banks do not work, ATMs are unreliable, and exchange rates vary wildly.
Entry
Travellers need a tourist card alongside a passport, plus proof of medical insurance. Both are usually arranged through the airline or a specialist agent.
Power cuts
Blackouts are common and can last hours. Carry a torch, keep devices charged and choose accommodation with a generator if you need reliable air conditioning.
Internet
Connectivity is slow and patchy, with public Wi-Fi hotspots and prepaid data cards. Download maps and translations before you arrive.
Staying
Licensed private homes offer better food and far better conversation than most state hotels, and they keep money in local hands.
