Why go

Malta's second island is fourteen kilometres across, greener than the main island and considerably slower in pace. Honey-coloured farmhouses sit among terraced fields, a fortified citadel rises above the capital, Victoria, and the coast runs through cliffs, salt pans and small rocky bays. Everything is within twenty minutes of everything else, and a good deal of the island is still farmed.

The ferry from Ċirkewwa takes about twenty-five minutes and runs through the night, which makes this either a day trip or, far better, a base of its own. Converted farmhouses with private pools are the characteristic stay. Spring, when the island turns briefly green and covers itself in wild flowers, is the best time; the sea is warmest in September.

From our guides

Convert a farmhouse stay into your base — most come with private pools — and swim in the inland sea at Dwejra. The twenty-five-minute ferry ride keeps crowds modest even in August, but spring, when the island is briefly emerald, is Gozo's finest hour.

Things to do

  1. The Cittadella

Victoria's fortified hilltop citadel, with restored walls you can walk right round for a view over the whole island and the sea.

  2. Ġgantija temples

Neolithic megalithic temples at Xagħra, older than the pyramids and among the earliest free-standing structures anywhere on earth.

  3. Dwejra and the inland sea

A lagoon joined to the open sea by a cave tunnel, with small boat trips through it and serious diving on the outside.

  4. Xwejni salt pans

Chequerboards of shallow pans cut into the coastal rock near Marsalforn, worked by the same families for generations.

  5. Ramla Bay

The island's main red-sand beach, backed by dunes, with Calypso's Cave on the headland looking down over it.

  6. Wied il-Għasri

A narrow rocky inlet reached down a long flight of steps, with a pebble beach at the bottom and very clear water.

Getting there

  1. Fly to

    Valletta (MLA)

Nearest airport to Gozo, about 31km away as the crow flies.

  2. Then

    To Victoria

About 45 minutes by car or taxi from Malta airport (MLA) up to Cirkewwa, then a 25-minute ferry to Mgarr and 15 minutes on to Victoria, so under two hours door to door. A fast passenger ferry also runs from Valletta.

  3. On the ground

    Getting around

Victoria sits in the middle of the island with nothing more than 20 minutes away, but the farmhouse stays, Dwejra and the northern bays are scattered and awkward without wheels.

Public transport: Buses radiate from Victoria to most villages and run to the ferry, but they are slow and infrequent, and a farmhouse in the countryside puts you beyond them.

Where to stay

Converted stone farmhouses with private pools are the signature booking, alongside small hotels in Victoria and Marsalforn. A couple of larger resorts, and no real chain presence.

  • Best base overall

    Victoria

The island's middle, under the Citadel, where every bus route meets and the shops and markets are. It is inland, so you ride or drive to swim.

  • Best with children

    Marsalforn

The north coast's main resort, a sheltered bay with a promenade, boat trips and the salt pans to walk to. Modest beach, but the swimming and the choice of food work.

  • Best for couples

    San Lawrenz

A quiet western village of converted farmhouses with private pools, close to Dwejra and the coast path. You will need a car, and you will hear church bells.

  • Best value

    Nadur

A hilltop village of everyday flats and farmhouses at lower rates, with Ramla Bay down the hill. Sleepy, and steep on foot.

Worth knowing before you book: Farmhouses let Saturday to Saturday in summer and the good ones go by early spring. Check the ferry timetable for late evenings; sailings thin out after midnight.

Good to know

Getting there
Ferries from Ċirkewwa on Malta run roughly every forty-five minutes, day and night, and take about twenty-five minutes.
Driving
Driving is on the left and lanes are narrow. A small hire car makes the island easy; book it on Gozo rather than bringing one over.
Timing
Spring brings wild flowers and mild weather. August runs above 30°C and locals holiday at the coast, so book well ahead.
Etiquette
Churches are central to village life and dress codes are enforced. Village feasts run through the summer and welcome visitors.
Pack this
Water shoes. Most swimming is off rock rather than sand, and the limestone coast is sharp underfoot.
