Why go

A cog railway that has run out of Zermatt since 1898, climbing to 3,089 metres in about thirty-three minutes. The ascent leaves the village lanes, crosses a gorge and works up through larch woods to bare rock and a ridge encircled by twenty-nine peaks above four thousand metres. The Matterhorn stays in view for most of the way up, showing its most photographed profile.

Trains run year round, which is unusual at this altitude, and the line doubles as ski access in winter. Zermatt is car-free and reached by train from Täsch, so a night in the village is the normal shape of a visit. Summer opens high walking trails down from the intermediate stations, and July to September is the reliable window for clear mornings.

From our guides

Sit on the right ascending. The connoisseur's move is the summer sunrise train — book it, watch the peak catch fire, then walk down one station to the Riffelsee for the reflection shot.

Things to do

  1. Riffelsee reflection

A small lake one station below the summit mirrors the Matterhorn on still mornings, a twenty-minute walk down from Rotenboden.

  2. Sunrise trains

Special early departures in summer put you on the ridge as the peak catches first light. Booked separately and worth the alarm.

  3. Gorner Glacier

One of the largest glacier systems in the Alps spreads below the eastern side of the ridge, visible in full from the summit terrace.

  4. Five lakes walk

A signposted trail from Blauherd passes five tarns on the way back towards Zermatt, several holding the Matterhorn's reflection.

  5. Zermatt's Hinterdorf

The old quarter of timber granaries raised on stone discs to keep the mice out, a few streets from the station.

  6. Matterhorn Museum

An underground museum in the village covering the first ascent in 1865 and the rope that broke on the way down.

Worth knowing before you book: The summer sunrise train runs on set dates and must be booked in advance. Check the Matterhorn webcam the evening before rather than committing blind.

Good to know

Timing
Cloud gathers around the Matterhorn as the day goes on. First trains give much the best odds of a clear summit.
Pack this
Warm layers and sunglasses. The top is above three thousand metres and can be near freezing under strong July sun.
Book ahead
Ordinary departures rarely need booking, but the summer sunrise trains and the winter ski period certainly do.
Getting there
Zermatt bans cars. Drive to Täsch and take the shuttle train, or come the whole way by Swiss rail via Visp.
Safety
The altitude gain is fast, from 1,600 to over 3,000 metres in half an hour. Take it slowly at the top if you feel light-headed.
