Why go

Stone houses stacked in tiers on a Luberon hillside, all cut from the same pale limestone, with a castle at the top and terraced lanes running round the slope. The view from the road below is the one on every postcard of Provence. Around it lie ochre villages, lavender fields, vineyards and weekly markets, and all of it sits within an hour of Avignon.

This is a stay-put trip: a house or hotel with a pool, a market in the morning, another village in the afternoon. Late June and early July catch the lavender in flower, and everything is booked out accordingly. September is quieter, still warm and better for wine. August is hot, crowded and the narrow roads slow to a crawl by mid-morning.

From our guides

Stay in a converted mas with a pool, drive nowhere in particular, and let rosé o'clock arrive when it arrives. Late June catches the lavender at nearby Sénanque Abbey in full purple; book the village's clifftop restaurant terraces ahead, because half of Paris has the same idea.

Things to do

  1. Sénanque Abbey

A twelfth-century Cistercian monastery in a fold below the village, with lavender rows in front of it through late June and July.

  2. Village des Bories

A cluster of restored dry-stone huts outside the village, built without mortar and used as shelters into the nineteenth century.

  3. Roussillon ochre trail

A short marked walk through the red and orange quarries of a neighbouring village, which is painted the colour of the pigment it mined.

  4. Tuesday market

The weekly market fills the square below the castle with produce, cheese, olives and fabric. Park early or walk in from below.

  5. Luberon hill villages

Ménerbes, Lacoste, Bonnieux and Oppède le Vieux are each within twenty minutes, and each will absorb a whole afternoon.

  6. Fontaine de Vaucluse

A powerful spring at the foot of a cliff, the source of the Sorgue, at its most dramatic after heavy spring rain.

Getting there

  1. Fly to

    Marignane, Bouches-du-Rhône (MRS)

Nearest airport to Gordes, about 53km away as the crow flies.

  2. Then

    To Gordes

About 45 minutes by car east from Avignon (AVN), or an hour from Marseille. There is no useful rail link, so pick up a hire car at the airport or at Avignon TGV.

  3. On the ground

    Getting around

The village is steep and parking sits below the walls, so expect to walk up. Senanque Abbey is 10 minutes down the far side by car, and the other Luberon villages, Roussillon, Menerbes, Bonnieux, are each 15 to 30 minutes away.

Public transport: Thin. A handful of regional buses reach Cavaillon and Apt, but the hilltop villages and lavender fields are effectively car-only.

Where to stay

Converted mas and bastides with pools, let by the week, plus a few small luxury hotels in the villages. Ordinary chain hotels sit down on the main roads, not up here.

  • Best base overall

    Gordes

The stacked stone village itself, with terrace restaurants looking across the Luberon and Senanque ten minutes away. Steep, expensive, and choked with coaches around midday.

    Les Imberts

The flat hamlet below the village, where most of the rentable mas with pools actually sit. You drive up for dinner, but nobody is hauling a pushchair up a cliff.

  • Best for couples

    Roussillon

Twenty minutes east and built of ochre, with the old quarries to walk and far fewer visitors after five. The choice of rooms is small, so book early.

    Cabrieres-d'Avignon

A plain working village on the plain below, ten minutes away, with gites and small hotels at noticeably lower rates. Nothing to look at, everything within reach.

Worth knowing before you book: Village houses take Saturday to Saturday bookings in July and August, and the lavender fortnight in late June and early July goes close to a year ahead.

Good to know

Driving
A car is essential and village parking is limited and paid. Roads are narrow, and the lavender routes gridlock in early July.
Timing
Lavender flowers from roughly mid-June to mid-July and is cut soon after. Do not plan a lavender trip for August.
Book ahead
Accommodation and restaurant terraces are reserved months out for the summer. Nothing here is spontaneous in July.
Etiquette
Lavender fields are private crops. Photograph from the edge and do not walk in among the rows.
Pack this
Sun protection and shoes for slopes. The village is built on a hill and everything involves steps.
