Why go
The middle of three small coral islands off north-west Lombok, Gili Air is flat, sandy and about two kilometres across, with no cars or motorbikes on it at all. Bicycles and horse carts do the work instead. The reef starts a few metres from the eastern shore, where green turtles graze most days, and the western side takes the sunset over Bali's Mount Agung.
It sits between party-focused Trawangan and very quiet Meno, and borrows something from each: enough cafés and beach bars to give a day some structure, none of the noise. Boats come from Bali in two to three hours or from Bangsal on Lombok in fifteen minutes. April to October is dry season; January and February bring rain and rougher crossings.

From our guides
Between party-minded Gili Trawangan and sleepy Gili Meno, Gili Air gets the balance right: no motorised traffic, turtles grazing off the east-coast reef and just enough good cafés to keep the days structured. Horse carts and bicycles handle logistics; the sunset view of Bali's Mount Agung handles the evenings. Take the public boat from Bangsal on Lombok rather than pricey fast boats from Bali if you're already nearby.

Things to do
-
Turtles off the east coast
Green and hawksbill turtles feed on seagrass within easy swimming distance of the shore. Snorkel gear hires cheaply on the beach.
-
Walking the island
A sand track circles the whole island in about ninety minutes, past coconut groves, village houses and long empty stretches of beach.
-
Sunset over Agung
The west-facing beach looks across to Bali's volcano, reduced to a silhouette by the evening light. Swings and low tables line the sand.
-
Diving the Gili reefs
Sites around the three islands include reef sharks, turtles and a shallow underwater sculpture near Meno, all suitable for beginners.
-
Gili Meno
The quietest of the three, ten minutes away by boat, with a salt lake, a bird park and very deliberately nothing else.
-
Sand-floor warungs
Simple local kitchens serving grilled fish, nasi campur and fierce sambal, generally at a fraction of restaurant prices.

To Gili Air

Getting around
There are no cars or motorbikes on the island. You walk it end to end in about 20 minutes, or use a bicycle or a horse cart, and hop to Gili Meno and Trawangan on the island-hopper boats.
Public transport: The public boats from Bangsal are cheap and frequent enough by day, but they stop in the afternoon and there is nothing motorised once you land.

Where to stay
Bamboo bungalows, small family homestays and a handful of design-minded boutique places. No chains, nothing above two storeys, and power and water can be temperamental.
-
Best base overall
East coast
The sunrise side holds most of the cafes, dive shops and beach bars, with turtles grazing the reef a few strokes out. It is the busiest stretch of an island that is never busy.

Best with children
South coast, near the harbour
Boats land here, so it is the shortest walk with luggage, and the lagoon is calm at high tide. Low tide exposes sharp coral, so pack reef shoes.

West coast
Sunset over Bali's Mount Agung, a scatter of bungalows and very little else. Dinner means a twenty-minute walk or a bicycle in the dark, as there are no street lights.

The inland lanes
Homestays in the island's small village cost a fraction of beachfront rates and sit five minutes from either shore. No sea breeze, so pay for the fan or the air conditioning.

Worth knowing before you book: Fast boats from Bali cost far more than the public boat from Bangsal on Lombok. Book July and August rooms ahead; the island is tiny and it fills.

Good to know
- Getting there
- Fast boats run from Bali's east coast and public boats from Bangsal on Lombok. The Bali crossing is open water and can be rough.
- Cash or card
- There are cash machines but they run empty. Bring rupiah in cash from Lombok or Bali as a backup.
- Etiquette
- Lombok is predominantly Muslim and, while the beaches are relaxed, it is normal to cover up in the village and away from the sand.
- Safety
- There are no motor vehicles and no hospital. Anything serious means a boat to Lombok, so travel insurance genuinely matters here.
- Pack this
- Reef-safe sunscreen, mosquito repellent and a torch. Paths away from the main strip are unlit after dark.
