Europa-Park
Regularly voted the world's best theme park, and the coaster line-up — Silver Star, Blue Fire, Wodan — explains why teenagers rank it above Disney.

Why go
Europa-Park is arranged as a tour of European countries in miniature, so a ride on a Norwegian rapids run leads into an Alsace quarter of half-timbered buildings and a genuine tarte flambée, before the Spanish or Icelandic zones further round. That structure gives the park a coherence most theme parks lack, with landscaping and architecture treated as seriously as the ride line-up itself. The coasters, Silver Star, Blue Fire and Wodan among them, hold their own against any park in Europe.
Two days is the realistic minimum to cover both the rides and the themed areas properly, and the on-site hotels, each themed to a different country, are worth the extra cost if staying that long. Fly into Basel or Zurich rather than trekking across Germany from Frankfurt, since the park sits right on the Swiss and French borders. Term-time visits outside German school holidays are noticeably quieter than weekends and summer.

From our guides
The park is arranged as themed European countries, so you ride a Norwegian rapids run, then eat proper tarte flambée in the Alsace quarter. Fly to Basel, just across the border, rather than trekking from Frankfurt. Two days is right; the on-site hotels are themed to the hilt and worth it.
