Why go
Dubrovnik's Old Town is a genuinely rare survival, a complete medieval and Renaissance city still walled and largely traffic-free, its limestone streets polished to a shine by centuries of foot traffic. Beyond the famous wall walk, the city has proper museums, Baroque churches and a working port, alongside the newer fame that Game of Thrones filming brought. Outside the walls, a short cable car or a boat trip opens up pine-covered islands and quiet coves within minutes of the crowds.
October, or April and May, are the sensible months, avoiding the cruise-ship peak of July and August while keeping the sea warm enough to swim. Two or three nights inside or just outside the walls covers the essentials, extended with a day trip to the Elafiti Islands or Montenegro's Bay of Kotor. It's a strong choice for a romantic short break, less so for anyone wanting nightlife or budget prices.

From our guides
By 8pm the Stradun's limestone, polished by centuries of feet, gleams under the lamps and the alleys smell of grilled fish. Walk the full wall circuit at opening time, take the cable car up Srđ for sunset over the Adriatic, and drink wine at a buža bar cut into the cliff face.

Things to do
-
City Walls
A nearly two-kilometre circuit atop the fortifications, with views over the rooftops and sea best walked early in the morning.
-
Stradun
The polished limestone main street running through the heart of the Old Town, busiest at midday and calmer after dinner.
-
Srđ cable car
A short ride up the hill behind the city for sunset views over the Adriatic and the walled town below.
-
Lokrum Island
A short boat trip to a wooded island with a botanical garden and swimming spots away from the city's crowds.
-
Buža bars
Informal bars cut into the cliffs outside the city walls, drinks served over open sea with a sunset view included.
-
Fort Lovrijenac
A clifftop fortress just outside the walls, used as a filming location and a viewpoint back towards the Old Town.

Best base overall
Old Town (within the walls)
Sleeping inside the walls gives you the Stradun before and after the day crowds, which is the whole trick here. There is no vehicle access and a great many steps.

Gruž
Around the ferry port, with apartments at everyday prices, the morning market and boats to the islands. No old-town atmosphere, and cruise-ship traffic passes through.

Worth knowing before you book: June to September needs booking months ahead, cruise-ship days clog the walls before nine, and old-town apartments involve carrying luggage up staircases.
