The experience
The upper Soča runs an improbable turquoise for its entire length, fed by glacial melt and limestone filtration, and river trekking trips take advantage of the narrowest gorge sections where the walls close in and the water deepens into swimmable pools. Guides lead small groups through a mix of gentle swims, low jumps and stretches of floating on your back, watching the canyon walls pass overhead. It is less technical than canyoning, closer to a guided wild swim with scenery attached.
Base in Bovec or Kobarid, both small valley towns with a strong outdoor-sports culture built around the river, and combine the gorge trek with rafting, kayaking or a cable car up to Kanin for mountain views. Wetsuits are provided, since the water stays cold even in high summer. June to September gives the most reliable weather and warmest air temperatures for getting in and out of the water repeatedly.

From our guides
Guided 'river trekking' trips combine gentle swims, small jumps and floating on your back watching the canyon rim slide past. Wetsuits are provided against the alpine chill. It is the closest swimming gets to flying.

Where to base yourself
Apartments and guesthouses run by families, campsites along the river, mountain huts and a few small hotels. No resorts and nothing large anywhere in the valley.
-
Best base overall
Bovec
The adventure-sports town at the top of the valley, where the operators, gear shops and pizzerias are. It is small, and beds go fast in July and August.

Kobarid
Half an hour downstream, cheaper, with the museum, the Kozjak waterfall walk and better restaurants. Some trips still start up at Bovec, so factor the drive.
Find stays in Kobarid -
Quietest
Trenta
Up in the national park past the source of the river, with farmhouses and total calm. Almost nothing is open in the evening and mobile signal is patchy.

Tolmin
A larger town at the valley's south end with a shop, a pool and gentler river access at the Tolmin gorge. Furthest from the best drifting stretches.
Find stays in Tolmin
Worth knowing before you book: The valley fills for July and August, and the Punk Rock Holiday and Sajeta festivals near Tolmin take the rest. Water levels decide whether trips run at all in spring.
