Why go
Dominica is mountainous and densely forested rather than beach-fringed, built around volcanic peaks, rivers and a rainforest interior that covers most of the island. Trafalgar Falls, the Valley of Desolation and the Boiling Lake, reached on a demanding day hike, are the headline sights, alongside gorges you can swim straight through, like Titou Gorge. Beaches exist but are mostly small, dark-sand coves rather than the long white stretches found elsewhere in the Caribbean.
This suits an activity-based trip: hiking, river tubing, canyoning and, offshore, swimming with the resident sperm whale population under permit, rather than a pure lie-on-the-beach week. Roads are winding and travel between sights takes longer than the distances suggest, so a hire car or driver-guide helps. February to May is the driest stretch; hurricane season, June to November, brings the highest risk of disruption.

From our guides
Instead: 365 rivers, boiling lakes, gorges you swim through, and sperm whales resident offshore all year — Dominica is the world's best place to snorkel alongside them (permits required). February to May is driest. Come for the hiking; stay because the island refuses to be hurried.

Things to do
-
Boiling Lake
A flooded fumarole reached by a demanding day hike through the Valley of Desolation, among the largest such lakes in the world.
-
Trafalgar Falls
Twin waterfalls a short walk from the road, with a natural pool for swimming beneath them and hot springs close by.
-
Titou Gorge
A narrow, cool gorge that visitors swim through between smooth basalt walls, featured briefly in a well-known pirate film.
-
Sperm whales
A resident population found offshore nearly year-round, watched by boat or, under permit, snorkelled with by licensed operators.
-
Champagne Reef
A snorkelling site where volcanic gas bubbles rise through the warm shallow water, giving the sensation of swimming through soda.
-
Emerald Pool
A rainforest waterfall and pool reached by a short, easy walk from the road, one of the island's most accessible sights.

Getting around
A hire car or a driver-guide is the way to reach the trailheads and river valleys, on roads that are steep, narrow and slower than the distances suggest.
Public transport: Shared minibuses link the villages with Roseau on weekdays, but they rarely suit hiking timings.

Where to stay
Eco-lodges, small guesthouses, cottages and a few nature retreats built into the rainforest. No large resorts, no chains and very little on the beach itself.
-
Best base overall
Roseau
The capital, with the ferry, the market, guesthouses and tour operators, plus quick access to Trafalgar Falls and the Boiling Lake trailhead. It is scruffy and loud on cruise days.

Best value
Portsmouth and Picard
The northern town by the Indian River, with cheap rooms serving the medical school and calm swimming at Purple Turtle. A long, slow drive from the southern hikes.

Best for couples
Soufrière and Scotts Head
The southern tip, where the volcanic bay makes for warm snorkelling and the sunsets are the island's best. Very few beds and almost no nightlife.

Quietest
Calibishie
The north-east coast, with red-rock coves, small cottages and proper quiet. It is exposed to Atlantic swell and remote from the ferry and the airport.

Worth knowing before you book: There are few rooms island-wide, so the dry season from February to May and the whale-watching months book out early. Sperm whale swims need a permit arranged in advance.
