Courmayeur
On the Italian side of Mont Blanc, Courmayeur pairs a cobbled, boutique-lined centre with the Skyway Monte Bianco — a rotating cable car that lifts non-skiers to 3,466 metres for espresso above the glaciers.

Why go
Courmayeur sits at the foot of Mont Blanc's Italian face, a resort town of stone lanes, gelato counters and mountaineering shops that has stayed proudly Italian despite decades of alpine tourism. Skiers have the Checrouit bowl and long red runs back into the village; summer swaps skis for via ferrata routes, glacier walks and the Tour du Mont Blanc, which passes almost through the centre. The Val Veny and Val Ferret valleys fan out on either side, both dead ends for traffic and perfect for walking.
A base here works well paired with Chamonix over the Mont Blanc tunnel, though most visitors are happy to stay put: the Skyway cable car and the thermal baths at Pré-Saint-Didier fill rest days, and the food more than justifies a week. Winter suits committed skiers over beginners, given the terrain; July and August bring reliable weather for hiking, while shoulder months can see some lifts close for maintenance. Families do well here, though the resort leans slightly more sophisticated than family-focused.

From our guides
Thermal baths at nearby Pré-Saint-Didier soak away any residual stress. The food scene, from mountain-hut polenta to Michelin ambitions, is the real headline act.

Courmayeur village
The cobbled centre around Via Roma has the restaurants, the Skyway bus and the cable car within reach. Skiing back to the door is not really possible, so you use the lift and the shuttle.

Worth knowing before you book: Italian holiday weeks around Christmas, New Year and late February sell out early and usually require a week's stay with half board.

Good to know
- Getting there
- Nearest airports are Geneva and Turin, both roughly two hours by road through the Mont Blanc tunnel.
- Timing
- High winter season runs Christmas to February; August is busiest for hiking, so June or September are quieter.
- Driving
- The town centre is largely pedestrianised, and a car is more useful for reaching the valleys than for getting around Courmayeur itself.
- Altitude
- Many walks and lifts sit well above 2,000 metres, so it is worth pacing the first day.
- Pack this
- Layers work best, since weather on the glacier plateau can shift quickly even in summer.
