Why go

Courmayeur sits at the foot of Mont Blanc's Italian face, a resort town of stone lanes, gelato counters and mountaineering shops that has stayed proudly Italian despite decades of alpine tourism. Skiers have the Checrouit bowl and long red runs back into the village; summer swaps skis for via ferrata routes, glacier walks and the Tour du Mont Blanc, which passes almost through the centre. The Val Veny and Val Ferret valleys fan out on either side, both dead ends for traffic and perfect for walking.

A base here works well paired with Chamonix over the Mont Blanc tunnel, though most visitors are happy to stay put: the Skyway cable car and the thermal baths at Pré-Saint-Didier fill rest days, and the food more than justifies a week. Winter suits committed skiers over beginners, given the terrain; July and August bring reliable weather for hiking, while shoulder months can see some lifts close for maintenance. Families do well here, though the resort leans slightly more sophisticated than family-focused.

From our guides

Thermal baths at nearby Pré-Saint-Didier soak away any residual stress. The food scene, from mountain-hut polenta to Michelin ambitions, is the real headline act.

Things to do

  1. Skyway Monte Bianco

A rotating cable car climbs to Punta Helbronner at 3,466 metres, opening onto glacier panoramas and a rooftop terrace café.

  4. Tour du Mont Blanc

The classic long-distance walking route loops around the whole massif over roughly eleven days, passing almost through Courmayeur on its way.

  5. Checrouit ski area

Sunny, mostly red-graded pistes reached directly from the village by cable car, popular with intermediate skiers and offering some of the best views on the mountain.

  6. Historic centre

Cobbled streets lined with mountaineering shops, bakeries and bars, sitting directly beneath the Mont Blanc massif and busiest in the evening after skiing or walking.

Family-run alpine hotels with wood and stone interiors, some smart four stars, apartments and mountain rifugi. Very few chains, and the style is Italian rather than purpose-built resort.

  • Best base overall

    Courmayeur village

The cobbled centre around Via Roma has the restaurants, the Skyway bus and the cable car within reach. Skiing back to the door is not really possible, so you use the lift and the shuttle.

    Dolonne

An old hamlet across the river with its own gondola into the ski area and lower rates. It is a short walk and a footbridge from the nightlife, uphill on the way home.

  • Closest to the sights

    Entrèves and La Palud

At the foot of the Skyway lift and the tunnel, ideal if the glacier cable car is the reason you came. Quiet in the evening, with only a couple of places to eat.

  • Quietest

    Pré-Saint-Didier

Five minutes down the valley by the thermal baths, cheaper and calmer, with a bus to the lifts. You are out of the village atmosphere and will miss the passeggiata.

Worth knowing before you book: Italian holiday weeks around Christmas, New Year and late February sell out early and usually require a week's stay with half board.

Good to know

Getting there
Nearest airports are Geneva and Turin, both roughly two hours by road through the Mont Blanc tunnel.
Timing
High winter season runs Christmas to February; August is busiest for hiking, so June or September are quieter.
Driving
The town centre is largely pedestrianised, and a car is more useful for reaching the valleys than for getting around Courmayeur itself.
Altitude
Many walks and lifts sit well above 2,000 metres, so it is worth pacing the first day.
Pack this
Layers work best, since weather on the glacier plateau can shift quickly even in summer.
