Why go

Low, flat and built around water, the Danish capital is unusually easy to be in. Bikes outnumber cars on most streets, the harbour is clean enough to swim in, and the design instinct runs from the chairs in a café to the shape of a metro station. It is a city of small pleasures rather than grand set pieces: a pastry, a canal, a park, a sauna, another pastry.

Three or four nights covers the centre and a couple of neighbourhoods, with Malmö in Sweden half an hour away by train. Summer means long light evenings, harbour swimming and outdoor tables everywhere; the dark months trade that for candles, saunas and Tivoli lit for Christmas. It is expensive by European standards, though cycling, bakeries and free harbour baths take some of the sting out of it.

From our guides

The city that invented hygge as a lifestyle demonstrates it best in the dark months: candlelit wine bars, blankets on café chairs, cinnamon buns as currency. Tivoli Gardens transforms into a fairy-lit winter wonderland from mid-November, and Nyhavn's coloured townhouses look their painterly best under low winter sun. Warm up Danish-style with a harbour sauna session after a swim — bracing, but you'll talk about it for years.

Things to do

  1. Louisiana Museum of Modern Art

Thirty-five minutes north by train, a low building of glass corridors linking galleries to a sculpture park above the sea. Among the finest museum settings anywhere.

  2. Rosenborg Castle

A Renaissance royal residence with the crown jewels in the basement and a long formal garden outside that fills with picnicking students the moment it is warm.

  3. Christiania

A self-governing quarter founded in a disused barracks in 1971, with self-built houses, workshops and lakeside paths. Photography is restricted in parts; respect the signs.

  4. Torvehallerne

Two glass market halls near Nørreport packed with fish, cheese, smørrebrød and coffee counters. The efficient way to eat well at lunchtime without booking.

  5. Refshaleøen

A former shipyard across the water, now street food, saunas, art spaces and swimming platforms, reached by harbour bus or a ten-minute cycle over the bridges.

  6. The Round Tower

A seventeenth-century observatory climbed by a spiral ramp rather than stairs, ending in a rooftop view over the old town's copper roofs and spires.

Getting there

  1. Fly to

    Copenhagen (CPH)

Nearest airport to Copenhagen, about 9km away as the crow flies.

  2. Then

    To Copenhagen

The Metro and mainline trains run from Kastrup (CPH) into the city centre in about 15 minutes.

  3. On the ground

    Getting around

Central Copenhagen is flat and walkable, the driverless Metro is frequent, and hiring a bicycle is the local default.

Public transport: Superb: Metro, S-trains, buses and harbour buses all on one ticket.

Where to stay

Design hotels, a strong mid-range chain presence and lots of apartments. Rooms run small by British standards, and genuine budget beds mostly mean hostels.

  • Best base overall

    Indre By

The old centre puts Tivoli, Nyhavn and the shopping street within walking distance, which matters in January. It is the priciest quarter, and rooms are famously small.

    Find stays in Indre By
  • Best value

    Vesterbro

Behind the station, once rough and now full of coffee bars, butchers and good cheap hotels. The blocks nearest the station keep an edge after dark that some people mind.

    Find stays in Vesterbro
  • Best for nightlife

    Nørrebro

The most mixed and most interesting district, with wine bars, cheap eating and the lakes to walk home along. Fewer hotels than apartments, and you will want a bike.

    Find stays in Nørrebro
  • Best with children

    Christianshavn

Canal-side and calm, near the harbour baths and an easy walk over the bridge to the centre. Limited hotel choice, and the water everywhere needs watching with toddlers.

Worth knowing before you book: Prices spike around the summer and Christmas markets, and many hotels charge separately for breakfast, which is worth checking before it doubles the bill.

Good to know

Cycling
Hire a bike and use the segregated lanes; it is the fastest way around. Signal with your hand, keep right and never stray into the lane on foot.
Cards only
Denmark is close to cashless and the krone is not the euro. A contactless card covers everything from bakeries to harbour buses.
Harbour swimming
The public baths at Islands Brygge and elsewhere are free and open in summer. Water quality is monitored and closures are posted at the entrance.
Book ahead
The well-known restaurants release tables months in advance. Lunch, bakeries and market halls need no booking and are where much of the good eating happens.
Winter light
December days give around seven hours of daylight. Plan outdoor things for the middle of the day and lean into the candlelit indoor half of the city.
