Cervinia

Cervinia's trick is geography: high, sunny and snow-sure beneath the Italian side of the Matterhorn, with enormously wide, gentle pistes that let new skiers cruise for kilometres feeling like naturals.

Why go

Sitting at 2,050 metres in a bowl beneath the Matterhorn's southern face, this is a resort built for snow reliability rather than charm. The village is functional; the mountain is the reason to come. Wide, sunny, gently angled pistes run for kilometre after kilometre, which makes it one of the better places in the Alps to learn or to build confidence after a long break from skiing.

Lift passes can be extended to cross the ridge into Zermatt for the day, giving access to a far bigger area and the classic view of the Matterhorn from the north. Snow is dependable from December into April thanks to the altitude. Strong skiers looking for steep terrain or trees will find the local slopes tame, and high winds occasionally shut the top lifts, so keep a plan B.

From our guides

The famous Ventina run descends forever at a merciful gradient. Prices undercut its Swiss neighbour Zermatt substantially, and the mountain lunches are far better than beginners deserve. Wind can close the top lifts, so use calm days for the high, easy stuff.

Things to do

  1. The Matterhorn's Italian face

Called Monte Cervino here, the peak dominates every lift queue and terrace. The southern profile is broader and less pyramid-perfect than the Swiss postcard version.

  2. Plateau Rosa

The glacier saddle at around 3,480 metres is the top of the ski area and the crossing point into Switzerland, with cold, dry snow long after the valley has thawed.

  3. Day trip to Zermatt

With the extended pass you can ski down into a car-free Swiss village for lunch and return by lift. Watch the closing times carefully.

  4. Valtournenche

The linked village lower down the valley is cheaper and quieter, and the long run back down to it is one of the more satisfying descents in the area.

  5. Mountain restaurants

Aosta Valley cooking on the piste means polenta with fontina, cured meats and hearty soups, generally at prices that still surprise people arriving from Switzerland.

  6. Aosta town

An hour down the valley, a Roman theatre, arch and street plan survive in a small alpine city. Worth a non-ski day, particularly around its winter fair.

Getting there

  1. Fly to

    Caselle Torinese (TRN)

Nearest airport to Cervinia, about 82km away as the crow flies.

  2. Then

    To Breuil-Cervinia

About two hours by car from Turin (TRN), east on the motorway into the Aosta valley and then up the Valtournenche road. Geneva and Milan Malpensa are similar drives and are often better served by winter transfers.

  3. On the ground

    Getting around

The resort is compact and lifts start from the village, so most people park once and walk. Buses run down the valley, and the lift system links over the ridge into Zermatt on good weather days.

Public transport: Trains reach Châtillon in the valley, with connecting buses up to the resort; shared winter transfers from the airports are the usual choice.

Where to stay

Italian ski hotels of the half-board sort, apartment residences and a few upmarket properties. Catered chalets are less common here than in the French Alps.

  • Best base overall

    Breuil-Cervinia

The resort itself, high and snow-sure, with ski-in access to the wide beginner pistes and lifts up towards the Matterhorn. Architecture is functional at best and it is dead outside the ski season.

  • Best for couples

    Cervinia Cielo Alto

The quieter upper terrace above the main village, with views straight at the mountain and slopeside access. You will walk down or take the lift for the bars and restaurants.

  • Best value

    Valtournenche

Down the valley with its own gondola into the ski area, where rooms and apartments cost considerably less. It is lower, so the walk to the lift matters and snow at village level is less reliable.

    Find stays in Valtournenche
  • Quietest

    Cheneil and Torgnon

Small hamlets nearby with cross-country trails and traditional inns, good for anyone not skiing every day. There is little nightlife and a car helps a great deal.

Worth knowing before you book: High wind closes the top lifts and the link to Zermatt with some regularity, so do not book on that link alone. Christmas, New Year and the February Italian holiday weeks fill early.

Good to know

Altitude
The village sits above 2,000 metres and the top lifts approach 3,500. Drink plenty of water and take the first day gently.
Wind
Exposed, high terrain means the upper lifts close in strong wind more often than at wooded resorts. Ski the top when it is calm rather than saving it.
Pass options
The basic pass covers the Italian side; an upgrade adds Zermatt. Buy the upgrade only for days you will actually cross, and check the last lift home.
Sun
South-facing slopes at altitude burn skin fast and turn slushy by mid-afternoon in spring. Ski early and use proper sun protection.
Getting there
Turin and Geneva are the usual airports, both around two to three hours by road. The final valley road climbs steeply and needs winter tyres or chains.
