Why go
A wedge of medieval town sits between a long sandy beach and a 270-metre crag, close enough to the sea that waves break against the old defensive walls. The streets are narrow, shaded and paved in worn stone, opening suddenly onto the cathedral square, which is one of the better places in Sicily to sit and do nothing. Everything is within ten minutes on foot, including the sand.
An hour east of Palermo by train, this works either as a short break or as a comfortable base for the north coast and the Madonie mountains behind. July and August fill the beach and the restaurants; May, June and September give you the same warm sea with room to move. It is small, so anyone wanting a large resort or serious nightlife will find it limited.

From our guides
Swim in the morning, granita at noon, cathedral in the shade of the afternoon, then pasta con le sarde as the boats come in. Sicily in convenient miniature.

Things to do
-
La Rocca
A steep, stepped path climbs the crag above town past a Norman fortress and a much older megalithic temple, ending with the whole coastline laid out below.
-
Lavatoio Medievale
A medieval washhouse reached down a curving stone staircase, where a stream still runs cold through carved basins. A brief, strange, welcome escape from the heat.
-
Mandralisca Museum
A small private collection whose star is Antonello da Messina's Portrait of an Unknown Sailor, a face with one of the more knowing expressions in Italian painting.
-
The old town beach
A crescent of pale sand running west from the harbour, shallow and calm, with the cathedral towers behind. Free stretches sit between the sunbed concessions.
-
Madonie mountains
Inland, hill villages such as Castelbuono and Petralia Soprana sit among beech forest, with cooler air, mushroom dishes and Sicilian manna still harvested from ash trees.
-
Palermo by train
An hour along the coast brings you to street food at Ballarò, the Palatine Chapel and the mosaics at Monreale. Very doable as a long day out.

Getting around
The medieval centre, the beach and the cathedral are all within a few minutes on foot, and the Rocca is a steep climb straight up from town. Nothing here needs wheels.
Public transport: Very good: the Palermo to Messina railway line stops at Cefalù, with regular trains in both directions.

Where to stay
B&Bs and small hotels in the old town, beachfront hotels along the promenade, apartments everywhere, and holiday villages and campsites on the coast either side.
-
Best base overall
Cefalu old town
Medieval lanes between the cathedral and the beach, so you swim before breakfast and eat where the boats land. Streets are pedestrian and hot, and rooms tend to be small.

Best with children
Lungomare and the new town
Along the sandy town beach just west of the centre, with family hotels, lidos and easier parking. It lacks the old town's charm and is a fifteen-minute walk to the cathedral.

Quietest
Sant'Ambrogio and Pollina
Hill villages a short drive east with sea views, agriturismi and no crowds. You will drive down to the coast, and the roads are narrow and steep.

Best value
Campofelice di Roccella
Along the coast west of town, with campsites, holiday villages and apartments at noticeably lower prices. It is functional rather than pretty, and the train is your friend.

Worth knowing before you book: August in Sicily is hot and completely full, with many old town rooms requiring several nights minimum. Parking in the centre is restricted, so confirm arrangements with the property.

Good to know
- Getting there
- Regional trains run along the coast from Palermo in about an hour, and the station is a ten-minute walk from the old town. No car needed to arrive.
- Driving
- The historic centre is largely closed to traffic and parking is scarce in summer. If you hire a car, choose accommodation that guarantees a space.
- The climb
- La Rocca has an entrance fee and closes in the late afternoon. Go early or an hour before closing; there is no shade on the way up.
- Etiquette
- The cathedral asks for shoulders and knees covered, as do most Sicilian churches. Keep a light scarf in your beach bag.
- Crowds
- Day-trippers arrive from Palermo mid-morning and leave by early evening. The town belongs to residents and overnight guests again after seven.
