Cape Sounion
The Temple of Poseidon has stood on this headland south of Athens since 440 BC, its marble columns turning gold as the sun drops into the Aegean — Byron liked it enough to carve his name on one.

Why go
The headland at the southern tip of Attica ends in white marble and open sea, with the columns of the Temple of Poseidon standing on the highest point. Ships still pass below on the shipping lane into Piraeus, which is exactly what the temple was built to watch. There is little else here beyond scrub, wind and light, and that emptiness is the point.
Most people come as a half-day trip from Athens, driving or taking the coach down the Attica coast road in the late afternoon and returning after dark. The site is small, so an hour or two is plenty, but the road itself deserves time: swimming coves, seafood tavernas at Legrena and Palaia Fokaia, and the port of Lavrio just around the corner. Summer sunsets draw a crowd.

From our guides
An hour's drive from the capital, it makes an operatic full stop to a city break. Arrive ninety minutes before closing, walk the quieter western side of the temple, and time your question for the moment the columns catch fire.

Things to do
-
Temple of Poseidon
Fifteen Doric columns survive on the cliff edge, dating from the 440s BC. The western side catches the last light and stays quieter than the main approach.
-
Sanctuary of Athena
A smaller, ruined precinct on the low hill just inland from the temple, usually overlooked entirely. Worth the five-minute walk for the view back to the headland.
-
Athenian Riviera drive
The coast road from Glyfada south through Vouliagmeni and Varkiza runs beside the sea most of the way, with swimming stops whenever you feel like one.
-
Lake Vouliagmeni
A warm, brackish lake fed by underground springs, hemmed in by a cliff and swimmable year-round. A good stop on the way down from the city.
-
Sounio beach
The sandy bay directly below the headland, sheltered and shallow, with the temple in view from the water. Busy at weekends, empty on a weekday morning.
-
Lavrio and the islands
The nearby port has ancient silver mines behind it and ferries out to Kea and Kythnos, making Sounion an easy first night of a Cyclades trip.

Sounion and Legrena
A handful of hotels and rooms within minutes of the temple, which means sunset without a coach ride home. There is very little else here and you will need a car.

Vouliagmeni and Varkiza
The smart coastal suburbs halfway down, with beach clubs, good seafood and a lake to swim in. Prices are high and you are outside the city for evenings.

Best value
Anavyssos and Palaia Fokaia
Ordinary seaside towns on the same coast, with apartments at reasonable rates and sandy beaches. They are workaday, and Athens is a fair drive back.

Worth knowing before you book: The site closes at sunset and the last bus back leaves soon after, so check the timetable or drive. Athens hotel rates peak in spring and autumn rather than midsummer.

Good to know
- Timing
- Arrive well before the site closes to have time on the quieter side of the temple. Closing hours shift with the season, so check on the day.
- Getting there
- Roughly 70 kilometres from central Athens, about an hour and a half by car with traffic. Coaches run from the city along both the coastal and inland routes.
- Crowds
- Sunset is the busy hour, particularly in July and August. Mid-morning is almost empty and the marble looks better against a blue sky than a hazy one.
- Pack this
- There is no shade on the headland and the wind is constant. A hat, water and something windproof cover most eventualities.
- Etiquette
- You walk a marked path around the temple rather than among the columns. Touching or climbing on the marble is not permitted.
