Canggu & Uluwatu
Bali's party gravity has slid down the coast from Kuta's buckets to Canggu's beach bars, where Batu Bolong rolls from surf lessons into sunset DJ sets on the sand, and the clifftop bars of Uluwatu stage the island's most cinematic golden hour above the break.

Why go
Two ends of Bali's south-western coast with very different characters. Canggu is flat, dense and built over former rice paddy, with black sand beach breaks, cafés and beach bars that run from morning surf lessons into evening DJ sets. Uluwatu, on the Bukit peninsula further south, is clifftop, spread out and dramatic, with serious reef waves below and sunset bars above them.
Most trips base in one and visit the other, with an hour or more of traffic between them. A week here pairs well with a few days in Ubud inland or the Gili islands to the east. The dry season from May to September brings the best surf and the fullest bars, while the wet season is quieter and cheaper. Traffic and development are the main frustrations.

From our guides
Old Man's Sunday session remains the reliable classic; La Brisa does the driftwood-boho version next door. Dry season, May to September, is the window — and take a taxi home, not the scooter.

Things to do
-
Batu Bolong beach
Canggu's main beach break, black sand and a forgiving wave, with surf schools through the day and bars along the sand by evening.
-
Uluwatu temple at sunset
A clifftop sea temple with a kecak fire dance performed as the sun goes down. Keep a firm hold of your belongings around the monkeys.
-
Bingin and Padang Padang
Steep steps down to small beaches beneath the Bukit cliffs, with reef waves for experienced surfers and simple warungs on the way down.
-
Clifftop bars
Uluwatu's bars are cut into the cliff face directly above the break, and the sunset hour is the entire reason they exist.
-
The Canggu café strip
Berawa and Batu Bolong hold a dense run of cafés and juice bars, which is where the daytime social life happens before the beach.
-
Tanah Lot
A sea temple on a rock north of Canggu, at its best around high tide and sunset, though it draws very large crowds.

Getting around
Canggu is a sprawl of lanes rather than a walkable centre, so ride-hailing cars and scooters are how everyone gets around. Uluwatu's clifftop bars and breaks are spread out and need a driver in each direction.
Public transport: There is effectively no useful public transport; ride-hailing apps and hired drivers do the job.

Where to stay
Private villas with pools are the default, alongside boutique hotels, guesthouses and a huge hostel and co-living scene. Big beachfront resorts cluster in Seminyak and Nusa Dua.
-
Best base overall
Canggu, Batu Bolong and Berawa
The centre of gravity for beach bars, surf lessons and cafes, with everything a short scooter ride apart. Traffic on the narrow lanes is genuinely awful and building work is constant.

Uluwatu and Bingin
Clifftop villas and small hotels above the best waves on the island, with the sunset bars and the temple. It is spread out, steep, and you will drive for almost everything.

Seminyak
Between the two, with a wider range of hotels at more predictable prices, a long beach and plenty of restaurants. It is busier and more built up than either neighbour.

Sanur
On the calm east coast, with a reef-protected lagoon, a flat beachfront path and family-friendly hotels. It is a long way from the surf and the nightlife, which is the point.

Good to know
- Traffic
- Journeys take far longer than the distance suggests, especially between Canggu and Uluwatu. Allow well over an hour each way.
- Scooters
- They are the local transport, but crashes are common and hire insurance often will not cover you. A hired driver is the safer option.
- Reef cuts
- The Bukit breaks are shallow coral. Reef booties and a basic first aid kit are standard equipment for surfers here.
- Cash or card
- Cards are common in Canggu and much less so in warungs and at temple car parks. Carry rupiah in small notes.
- Temple dress
- Sarongs and sashes are required at temples and are usually lent or provided at the entrance for a small donation.
