Cancún & Tulum
Two flavours, one coastline: Cancún's hotel-zone mega-clubs deliver the full spring-break spectacle, while Tulum down the road counters with jungle-chic beach clubs, tulle canopies and sunrise sets between the palms — Zamna and Day Zero festivals draw the global techno circuit each January.

Why go
Two very different places share the same Caribbean coastline. Cancún is a purpose-built resort strip of high-rise hotels and large clubs on a sandbar, efficient and unsubtle. Tulum, an hour and a half south, is a low-rise beach road of design-led hotels and beach clubs backed by jungle. Both sit on white sand with warm, pale turquoise water in front of them.
A week split between the two, or a base in Playa del Carmen between them, covers most of it, with cenotes and Maya sites inland for the days off the beach. The dry season from November to April is the reliable window, and hurricane season peaks in September. Sargassum seaweed can affect the coast in summer, and Tulum's beach road has grown steadily more expensive.

Things to do
-
Cenotes
Freshwater sinkholes in the limestone, some open pools and some cave systems, scattered through the jungle inland from both towns.
-
Tulum ruins
A small Maya site on a cliff above the sea, where the setting rather than the scale is the point. Arrive at opening time.
-
Chichén Itzá
The best known Maya site in Yucatán and a long day trip inland. An early start avoids both the coaches and the worst of the heat.
-
The Cancún hotel zone
Large-scale nightlife along the strip, loud and organised around bottle service and open-bar tickets rather than anything subtle.
-
Tulum beach clubs
Daybeds, DJs and sunset sets along the beach road, with the international electronic festival circuit arriving each January.
-
Isla Mujeres
A short ferry from Cancún, with the shallow water of Playa Norte and a much calmer pace than the mainland strip.

Getting around
Cancún's hotel zone is one long strip served by cheap local buses. Tulum splits between the town and the beach road a few kilometres away, so most people hire a bike, use taxis or drive.
Public transport: Coaches and colectivos run constantly along the coastal highway between Cancún, Playa del Carmen and Tulum, which covers most of what visitors need.

Where to stay
All-inclusive resorts along the Cancun and Riviera Maya coast, boutique cabanas and design hotels in Tulum, plus apartments and hostels in the towns.

Best base overall
Tulum beach road
The jungle-and-sand strip where the beach clubs and boutique hotels sit, walkable between bars and close to the ruins. It is expensive, power cuts happen, and seaweed can be a problem in summer.

Tulum Pueblo

Cancun Hotel Zone
The spit of high-rise resorts and mega-clubs, with a proper beach and the airport twenty minutes away. It is generic, loud and nothing like the rest of the coast.

Playa del Carmen and Puerto Morelos
Midway along the coast, with calm reef-protected swimming at Puerto Morelos, family all-inclusives and cenotes nearby. The bigger resorts here can feel like holiday factories.

Worth knowing before you book: Check recent reports on sargassum seaweed for your dates, as it varies hugely by month and beach. The dry season and the January festival weeks are booked far ahead.

Good to know
- Getting around
- The ADO coach network links Cancún airport, Playa del Carmen and Tulum cheaply and reliably. Taxis on Tulum's beach road are expensive.
- Sargassum
- Seaweed can wash up between roughly April and August. Beaches are cleared daily, but conditions vary from week to week.
- Cash or card
- Keep pesos for taxis, cenotes and small places, and pay in pesos rather than dollars wherever you are given the choice.
- Cenote care
- Rinse off sun cream before entering. Many cenotes require it, and the chemicals damage a fragile freshwater system.
- Safety
- Stick to the main tourist corridors, use official taxis or apps, and avoid buying drugs, which is where most trouble starts.
