The Hungarian Parliament glowing over the Danube at dusk
Budapest, Hungary Open in Google Maps Powered by Geoapify · © OpenStreetMap contributors · © OpenMapTiles

Buda and Pest face each other across the Danube; the airport is about 16km southeast.

Why go

Buda's castle hill stares across the Danube at Pest's café boulevards, and between them runs one of the world's great river frontages — Parliament by night is pure opera. Soak in neo-Baroque thermal pools, drink wine spritzers in crumbling courtyard bars, and enjoy grandeur at prices that let you upgrade the hotel room.

Grand, faded, steam-warmed

From our guides

The ruin-bar capital remains staggering value if you sidestep the obvious: Szimpla Kert deserves its fame but charges for it, while the seventh district around it hides courtyard kerts pouring fröccs — wine spritzers at pocket-change prices — to a mostly Hungarian crowd. The Instant-Fogas complex handles the multi-dancefloor club shift under one roof. Sunday morning, return to Szimpla for its farmers' market and watch the hangover economy at work.

Things to do

The Hungarian Parliament
The Hungarian Parliament
Széchenyi Thermal Baths
Széchenyi Thermal Baths
  1. The Hungarian Parliament

Tour the neo-Gothic colossus on the Pest embankment, its gilded staircases best admired before catching its reflection shimmer in the Danube at dusk.

  2. Széchenyi Thermal Baths

Wallow in butter-yellow neo-Baroque splendour while regulars play chess on floating boards in the steaming outdoor pools of City Park.

  3. Gellért Baths

Take the waters beneath Art Nouveau mosaics and turquoise Zsolnay tiles in what may be the most beautiful bathing hall in Europe.

  4. Fisherman's Bastion & Castle Hill

Ride the 1870 funicular up to Buda's cobbled castle quarter and drink in the fairy-tale turrets' postcard panorama of Parliament across the river.

  5. Ruin bars of the Jewish Quarter

Lose an evening in Szimpla Kert and its crumbling-courtyard kin, where mismatched furniture, fairy lights and pálinka conspire in District VII's tenements.

  6. The Great Market Hall

Stock up on paprika, lángos and Tokaji under the market's Eiffel-esque ironwork, then glide past the floodlit riverbanks by evening boat.

  1. Fly to

    Budapest (BUD)

Nearest airport to Budapest, about 10km away as the crow flies.

  2. Then

    To Budapest

About 30 to 45 minutes from Budapest (BUD) into the centre by airport bus onto the metro, by shuttle minibus or by taxi.

  3. On the ground

    Getting around

Three metro lines, extensive trams and the riverside walkways make the city easy on foot and rails. The baths and the seventh district ruin bars are all on the network.

Public transport: Excellent and inexpensive, with night trams and buses covering the late hours.

From the airport

The 100E Airport Express runs 24/7 into Deák Ferenc tér in about 40 minutes. Főtaxi, the official airport partner, waits at ranks outside arrivals on the citywide fixed tariff:

Metro, trams & travelcards

Four metro lines — including the 1896 M1, continental Europe's oldest underground — and the riverside trams 2, 4 and 6 cover everything. Buy tickets in the BudapestGO app or tap in contactless:

Taxis & ride-hailing

All Budapest taxis charge the same regulated tariff, so the choice is really about the app. Bolt dominates; the radio firms answer around the clock:

Car hire — for the wine country

You won't need a car in town, but Lake Balaton, the Danube Bend and the Tokaj wine region all beg for a day trip. Compare every operator:

Funicular & river boats

The 1870 Budavári Sikló funicular climbs from the Chain Bridge to the castle, and BKK's own D14 ferry is the cheapest Danube cruise in town — it's covered by ordinary travelcards:

Where to stay

Apartments in grand old blocks are the default, alongside design hotels, a handful of historic spa hotels and international chains along the river. Hostels are excellent and numerous.

  • Best base overall

    District V, Belvaros

The Pest riverbank between the Parliament and the Chain Bridge, walkable to almost everything and served by the small yellow metro. It is the priciest district and can feel corporate.

Find stays in District V, Belvaros
  • Best for nightlife

    District VII, Erzsebetvaros

The ruin bar quarter, where the courtyards and the late-night crowd are. Flats here are cheaper than District V but you will hear the street until three in the morning.

  • Best for couples

District I, Castle Hill and Viziváros

Buda side, cobbled and hushed after dark, with the Fisherman's Bastion above and thermal baths below. There are steep climbs everywhere and far fewer places to eat.

Find stays in District I, Castle Hill and Viziváros
  • Best value

    District XIII, Ujlipotvaros

A calm residential grid just north of the Parliament, with tram lines, real neighbourhood restaurants and lower rates. A fifteen-minute walk or a short tram ride to the tourist core.

Worth knowing before you book: Party-district flats are legally restricted in places and often noisy regardless, so read the reviews for noise. Rates jump for the August national holiday and New Year.

Good to know

Baths etiquette
Bring flip flops and a towel, and note that some pools require a swimming cap. Lockers and changing cabins are hired separately.
Timing
Baths are quietest first thing in the morning. Ruin bars fill after eleven at night and stay open very late indeed.
Cash or card
Cards are near universal, but keep forint for markets and small bars, and avoid exchange booths offering unusual rates.
Getting there
A direct airport bus runs into the city, and the bus and metro combination takes roughly an hour for rather less money.
Ticket checks
Validate transport tickets and keep hold of them. Inspectors are frequent, particularly at metro exits and interchanges.
