Why go

A small medieval city preserved almost whole, with brick step gables, a ring of canals and a street plan that has barely changed in five hundred years. The centre is compact enough to cross in twenty minutes, which means the day-trip crowds concentrate in a handful of squares and streets while everywhere else stays remarkably calm. Evenings, once the coaches have gone, are the reward.

Two nights is usually right, enough for the museums, a canal trip and an unhurried second day. It works well as a stop between Brussels and the coast, and Ghent is half an hour away by train if you want somewhere livelier as a counterpoint. Winter brings cold, early darkness and a Christmas market; summer brings long queues at the belfry.

From our guides

Bruges is at its most romantic after 6pm, when coach tours vanish and lamplight takes over. Climb the Belfry before it closes, drink a candlelit Trappist beer in a brown café, and take the first-morning walk along the Groenerei before anyone wakes.

Things to do

  1. The Belfry

366 steps up the medieval bell tower on the Markt for a view over the roofs and canals. Numbers inside are limited, so go early.

  2. Groeningemuseum

Flemish Primitives including Van Eyck and Memling, in a small and manageable collection that repays an unhurried hour or two rather than a march.

  3. Begijnhof

A walled courtyard of white houses under poplar trees, still a religious community and quiet by rule, with daffodils across the grass in spring.

  4. Canal boat trip

Half an hour at water level, which shows you the backs of buildings the streets never reveal. Boats leave from several jetties in the centre.

  5. Minnewater

The lake at the southern edge of the old town, with swans, a park and the least crowded corner of the historic centre.

  6. Beer, chocolate and frites

Trappist and abbey beers in old brown cafés, chocolate from small makers, and chips with mayonnaise from a stall on the square.

Getting there

  1. Fly to

    Zaventem (BRU)

Nearest airport to Bruges, about 94km away as the crow flies.

  2. Then

    To Bruges

About half an hour by car or taxi from Ostend (OST), or a similar time by train changing at Ostend station for Bruges.

  3. On the ground

    Getting around

The historic centre is compact and best walked, with canal boats and hire bicycles for variety. Cars are unwelcome and parking is peripheral.

Public transport: Very good. Belgian trains link Bruges with Brussels and the coast every half hour or so.

Where to stay

Small hotels and B&Bs in converted townhouses, a few grand canal-side properties and a scattering of apartments. Very little in the way of large modern chains inside the ring.

  • Best base overall

    Historic centre around the Markt

Staying inside the ring means the town is yours after the coaches leave, which is the whole point of sleeping here. Rooms are small, cobbles are loud, and cars are a nuisance.

  • Quietest

    Sint-Anna

A residential quarter a few minutes east of the centre, with windmills on the ramparts and almost no tourist traffic. Fewer restaurants, though everything is within a ten-minute walk.

  • Best for couples

    Langestraat and the eastern canals

Canal-side guesthouses in old merchant houses, close enough for the evening walk along the Groenerei but off the main tour route. Some rooms face busy roads, so check before booking.

  • Best value

    Sint-Michiels and around the station

Hotels here cost noticeably less and the walk into the centre through Minnewater park is pleasant. You lose the lamplit-at-midnight experience that makes Bruges.

Worth knowing before you book: Weekends and the Christmas market period sell out early and cost far more than midweek. Many central hotels have no lift and steep stairs, so ask if luggage is heavy.

Getting there
Belgian national rail links Brussels and Brussels airport to Bruges in about an hour and a half, with Eurostar connecting from London.
Cobbles
The old centre is cobbled throughout. Bring shoes that cope with it, and expect a suitcase to rattle all the way to the hotel.
Cash or card
Cards are accepted almost everywhere, though a few small cafés and chip stalls still prefer cash for small amounts.
Book ahead
Belfry time slots, summer canal trips and restaurant tables on Friday and Saturday nights all benefit from being booked in advance.
