Why go
No European capital carries its twentieth century so visibly. Bullet-scarred facades stand beside Prussian museums and Soviet-era boulevards, and the line of the Wall runs through the middle of it all as a double row of cobbles. Space is the other defining quality: wide streets, huge parks, disused airfields and lakes at the end of the S-Bahn, all of which the city uses constantly.
Four nights minimum, because the distances are real and the museums deserve time. Nightlife runs from Friday evening to Monday morning and shapes the whole rhythm of a weekend. Summer is for lakes, beer gardens and open-air venues; winter is grey, cheap and better for galleries. Prices remain modest for a western capital. Those wanting a pretty, compact old town will find the appeal takes longer to explain.

From our guides
Berlin's clubs open on Friday and close on Monday, bouncers are philosopher-kings and daylight inside is considered a design flaw. Beyond the techno temples of Berghain and about-to-be-legendary warehouses, there are lakeside bars, smoky jazz kellers and spätis — corner shops where the street party self-organises. Sleep is available in other cities.

Things to do
-
Museum Island
Five major collections on one Spree island, including the Pergamon's ancient architecture and the Neues Museum's bust of Nefertiti. A single pass covers all of them.
-
Reichstag dome
Norman Foster's glass cupola spirals above the parliamentary chamber with views across the city. Free, but registration is required in advance.
-
Berlin Wall Memorial
The Bernauer Strasse site preserves a section of the full death strip with watchtower and documentation. Far more instructive than the painted stretch at the East Side Gallery.
-
Tempelhofer Feld
A closed airport turned public park where people cycle and skate down the runways and grow vegetables beside the taxiways. Berlin's best single idea.
-
Memorial to the Murdered Jews
Peter Eisenman's field of 2,711 concrete stelae near the Brandenburg Gate, with an underground information centre that gives the abstraction its weight.
-
The city lakes
Wannsee, Müggelsee and Schlachtensee are all reachable on the S-Bahn, with swimming, forest paths and lidos. Summer weekends see half the city head out.

Getting around
Berlin runs on its U-Bahn, S-Bahn and trams, which operate through the night at weekends, so the club circuit needs nothing more than a day ticket and stamina.
Public transport: Excellent, and one of the few European systems that genuinely runs all night at weekends.

Where to stay
Apartments dominate, alongside design hotels in converted industrial buildings, big international chains around Mitte and Alexanderplatz, and an unusually good spread of hostels.
-
Best base overall
Mitte
Central, walkable to the museums and the Brandenburg Gate, and on every U-Bahn and S-Bahn line you will need. It is the most tourist-facing part of the city, so expect chain hotels rather than character.
Find stays in Mitte -
Best for nightlife
Kreuzberg
The bars around Kottbusser Tor and along the canal run all night, and the big clubs are a short taxi ride away. Noisy, scruffy in parts, and not where you come for an early night.
Find stays in Kreuzberg -
Best with children
Prenzlauer Berg
Leafy streets, playgrounds on most corners and a Sunday flea market in Mauerpark, with plenty of flats built for families. Quieter in the evenings, which cuts both ways.
Find stays in Prenzlauer Berg -
Best value
Neukolln
Rooms and flats cost noticeably less than Mitte and the ring line gets you anywhere in twenty minutes. The area is gentrifying unevenly, so look at the specific street before booking.
Find stays in Neukolln
Worth knowing before you book: Rates spike around the marathon, the Christmas markets and any large trade fair, and a Kreuzberg flat on a club street will be loud until dawn at weekends.

Good to know
- Cash or card
- Germany still runs on cash more than most of Europe. Many bars, bakeries and some restaurants take notes only, so keep euros on you.
- Sundays
- Shops close on Sundays by law, with station supermarkets the main exception. Museums, parks and brunch fill the gap perfectly well.
- Clubs
- Door policies are strict and unpredictable, queues are long and phone cameras are usually taped or banned. Go in a small group, sober-ish, and expect nothing.
- Getting around
- The U-Bahn, S-Bahn, trams and buses share one ticket system with honesty-based entry and regular inspections. Validate before boarding or expect a fine.
- Book ahead
- The Reichstag dome, the Pergamon's changing closures and the more popular memorial sites all require or benefit from advance registration.
