Why go

A wide grey-sand beach on Bali's south-west coast with a wave that breaks slowly over a mixed reef and sand bottom, which is why it has become the island's default place to learn. Warm water means no wetsuit, board hire costs very little, and longboarders share the line-up with first-timers. Behind the sand, Canggu supplies cafes, cheap rooms and a permanently transient crowd.

A week or two suits it, often as one half of a two-base Bali trip. Dry season from May to September brings the cleanest conditions and offshore mornings; the wet months still surf but the water quality drops after heavy rain. The area has grown fast and traffic on the narrow lanes is now considerable. Anyone seeking a quiet, traditional Bali should base elsewhere and visit for the day.

From our guides

Board rental is cheap, warm water means no wetsuit ever, and the wave suits longboarders working things out at their own pace. Mornings are glassy; sunsets are a full-beach event. Dry season, May to September, keeps things cleanest.

Things to do

  1. The beach break

A forgiving left and right that breaks slowly over sand and soft reef, working best on a mid tide. Crowded but good-natured, and the surf schools cluster at the northern end.

  2. Sunset on the black sand

The whole beach turns out for it, sitting on beanbags and the sea wall as the sun goes down behind the line-up. A daily event rather than an occasional one.

  3. Echo Beach

A short walk north, a faster reef break for more experienced surfers and a quieter stretch of sand. The rocks are sharp, so booties are worth having.

  4. Pererenan and Seseh

Two beaches further north where the development thins out and the sand empties. Reachable in fifteen minutes and a useful escape valve.

  5. Tanah Lot

A sea temple on a rock offshore, 20 minutes up the coast, best at sunset when the tide separates it from the mainland. Busy, but the silhouette earns it.

  6. Rice-field shortcuts

Narrow lanes still run between working paddies just inland of the beach, walkable or scooterable, with ducks and shrines and almost no cars.

Getting there

  1. Fly to

    Kuta, Badung (DPS)

Nearest airport to Batu Bolong, about 11km away as the crow flies.

  2. Then

    To Canggu

About forty-five minutes to an hour by car from Denpasar (DPS), north up the coast, though evening traffic can stretch that considerably.

  3. On the ground

    Getting around

Canggu's lanes are congested and hot to walk, so a rented scooter is what everyone uses; the break is directly in front of the beachfront cafés.

Public transport: Effectively none; scooters and ride-hailing apps are the whole system.

  • Best base overall

    Batu Bolong

Straight onto the beginner wave, with board hire, cafés and beach bars along one street. That street is also the traffic bottleneck of Canggu, and it is loud until late.

    Berawa

The next beach south, with more space, family villas and a wider beach. Fewer places to walk to, and the surf here is less forgiving.

    Pererenan

North across the river, calmer, with rice fields and a slower café scene. Five minutes by scooter from Batu Bolong, and thin on nightlife.

  • Best value

    Nelayan and Tibubeneng

Set back from the beach among the fields, where guesthouses and villas cost much less. You will need a scooter, and the lanes are unlit at night.

Worth knowing before you book: Traffic makes short distances slow, so stay within walking distance of the break you want. The airport transfer takes well over an hour in the evening.

Good to know

Timing
Mornings are glassy and offshore before the wind comes up around midday. Lessons and rental boards go fastest between seven and ten.
Water quality
Heavy rain flushes run-off onto this coast, and the sea can carry debris in the wet season. Avoid surfing for a day or two after a big downpour.
Safety
Rips run along the beach and lifeguard cover is limited to flagged sections. Learn where the channel is before paddling out, and never surf alone at dusk.
Scooters
Most people get about on two wheels. A valid international permit and a helmet are legally required, and insurance will not pay out without them.
Traffic
The lanes into Canggu jam badly in the late afternoon. A journey of three kilometres can take half an hour, so plan airport transfers generously.
