Ayia Napa's grown-up rival: Paphos & Limassol
Cyprus nightlife has quietly diversified beyond the strip: Limassol's marina and old town now do cocktail terraces, wine bars and beach clubs with actual music policies, while Paphos balances harbour-front lounges with proper clubs.

Why go
Cyprus's south coast offers the same warm sea and long season with the volume turned down. Limassol pairs a restored old town and a long seafront promenade with a marina district of terraces, while Paphos wraps a working harbour in Roman mosaics and Byzantine ruins. Neither is a strip, and both keep functioning as real cities once the summer crowds leave.
Five to seven nights lets you split the two, or base in one and drive to the other in under an hour. Behind the coast, the Troodos mountains bring pine forest, painted churches and cooler air, while the Akamas peninsula to the west stays wild. October still delivers sunshine and swimmable sea, which makes this an unusually reliable late-season choice.

Things to do
-
Limassol old town
Restored lanes behind the medieval castle, with courtyard terraces, small galleries and the Cyprus Medieval Museum. It fills quietly in the evening rather than all at once.
-
Kourion
A Greco-Roman city on a bluff west of Limassol, with a theatre still used for performances and intact floor mosaics in the House of Eustolios. The sea view is the point.
-
Paphos Archaeological Park
A UNESCO site of Roman villas whose mosaic floors, depicting Dionysus and Theseus, are among the finest in the eastern Mediterranean. Little shade, so go early.
-
Tombs of the Kings
Rock-cut underground tombs with Doric columns and peristyle courtyards, carved into the coastal shelf north of Paphos harbour. Bigger and stranger than the name suggests.
-
Akamas peninsula
Uncleared scrub, gorges and empty beaches at the island's north-west tip, with the Avakas Gorge walk and Lara Bay's turtle nesting sites. Rough tracks, so check your hire terms.
-
Troodos mountains
An hour inland, forested peaks with painted Byzantine churches under UNESCO protection, village tavernas and temperatures several degrees below the coast.

Best base overall
Limassol Marina and old town
Cocktail terraces, restaurants and the seafront promenade all walkable, with the beach clubs a short ride east. The city is long and strung out, so location within it matters.

Best with children
Limassol tourist area, Germasogeia
East of the centre, with the main beach hotels, a shallow shoreline and the water park nearby. Traffic on the coast road is constant, and the beach is grey sand.

Best value
Paphos harbour and Kato Paphos
Rooms cost less than Limassol, with harbour-front bars, the mosaics and the airport close by. Nightlife is tamer, and Bar Street is dated in parts.

Quietest
Coral Bay
Twenty minutes north of Paphos, a sandy bay with a low-key strip of tavernas. Calm and family-friendly, and a taxi to anything resembling a club.

Worth knowing before you book: October is the sweet spot, with warm sea and lower rates, but many Paphos hotels start closing in November. Limassol stays open year round.

Good to know
- Getting there
- Paphos and Larnaca airports both take flights from the UK. Paphos is the closer arrival for the west, Larnaca for Limassol, and the motorway between them is fast.
- Driving
- Traffic drives on the left and roads are well signed in Greek and English. A car is close to essential if you want Kourion, Akamas or the mountains.
- Timing
- The season runs long here. October and even early November hold sea temperatures around 24°C, with hotel rates well below August levels.
- Dress
- Covered shoulders and knees are expected in monasteries and painted churches, including the Troodos sites. Carry a light layer if a church day is planned.
- Cash or card
- Euros, and cards are accepted almost everywhere. Mountain villages and roadside fruit stalls are the exception, so keep some notes for a day trip inland.
