Ayia Napa

The Mediterranean's most unapologetic party machine: Nissi Beach runs foam parties and open-air raves through the afternoon, the Square's clubs take over after midnight, and the sea — genuinely some of Europe's clearest — handles the recovery swims.

Why go

The resort exists for two things, and does both without embarrassment: a coastline of fine pale sand and clear shallow water, and a nightlife district that runs until the sun comes up. The scale is small, so the beach, the bars and your bed are usually within walking distance of one another. Days are loud, wet and horizontal; nights start late and rarely finish early.

A week suits it, and the season stretches from May to late October thanks to sea temperatures that stay swimmable long after the rest of the Mediterranean cools. July and August are peak in every sense. June and September deliver the same water with fewer bodies and lower prices, and the quieter east coast around Protaras is twenty minutes away when you need calm.

From our guides

July and August are gloriously feral; June and September serve the same turquoise water with room to dance. Start at Nissi Bay's beach bars around 4pm, nap early evening like a professional, then hit the strip at one.

Things to do

  1. Nissi Beach

The best-known stretch of sand, with a sandbar you can wade to and beach clubs running events through the afternoon. Turquoise water, blaring sound systems, no pretence of peace.

  2. Cape Greco

A protected headland of white limestone cliffs, sea caves and walking trails east of town. Sunrise here is the traditional end to a long night out.

  3. Konnos Bay

A sheltered horseshoe of sand between Ayia Napa and Protaras, backed by pines and noticeably calmer than Nissi. Good for swimming and easy snorkelling.

  4. The Sea Caves

Wave-cut arches and hollows along the coast near Cape Greco, reachable by footpath or boat. A popular cliff-jumping spot, though the drops are higher than they look.

  5. Ayia Napa Monastery

A sixteenth-century Venetian monastery around a shaded courtyard, sitting incongruously beside the bar strip. Ten quiet minutes and a reminder the town predates the sound systems.

  6. Makronissos Beach

Sand coves at the western edge of town, calmer than the main resort beaches, with ancient rock-cut tombs on the headland just behind them.

Getting there

  1. Fly to

    Larnaca (LCA)

Nearest airport to Ayia Napa, about 36km away as the crow flies.

  2. Then

    To Ayia Napa

About forty-five minutes by car, taxi or coach transfer from Larnaca (LCA), east along the motorway.

  3. On the ground

    Getting around

The Square, the strip and Nissi Beach are all within walking distance or a short taxi hop, and a beach bus runs the coast in season.

Public transport: Local buses connect Ayia Napa, Protaras and Larnaca through the day and into the evening in summer, but taxis take over after midnight.

Where to stay

Large package hotels and a very big self-catering apartment market, with a few adults-only properties. Almost everything closes from November to March.

  • Best base overall

    Ayia Napa centre

Around the Square, so the clubs are a walk and not a taxi at four in the morning. Sleep is optional here in July and August, which is either the point or the problem.

  • Best for nightlife

    Nissi Beach

West of town, with the daytime beach parties and big hotels facing the water. Still noisy, and a fifteen-minute walk or short bus back to the Square.

  • Best with children

    Protaras

Twenty minutes north, with Fig Tree Bay's shallow water and a calm family strip. Deliberately quiet at night, and buses to Ayia Napa stop reasonably early.

  • Best value

    Pernera and Kapparis

Beyond Protaras, with cheaper apartments and small coves. Quiet to the point of dull, and you will taxi for a night out.

Worth knowing before you book: July and August book by spring and many hotels impose minimum stays. If you want to sleep at all, ask for a room away from the Square and the pool bar.

Good to know

Timing
Most clubs in the Square do not fill until well after midnight and run past sunrise. Sleeping in the early evening is standard practice, not a joke.
Driving
Cyprus drives on the left, which suits British licence holders. A hire car opens up Cape Greco, Protaras and the Larnaca side but is pointless within the resort.
Sun safety
Cypriot summer sun is fierce and the sea breeze hides it. Shade between noon and four, and high factor cream reapplied after every swim.
Water quality
The bays here regularly hold Blue Flag status and the water is very clear, but afternoon winds can pick up on the exposed south-facing beaches.
With kids
Family holidays work better in neighbouring Protaras or at the eastern end of town. The strip itself is not built with early bedtimes in mind.
