Why go
The rock headland between Ipanema and Copacabana is a small park you can walk up in five minutes, facing west along the beach towards the twin peaks of Dois Irmãos. Every clear evening the crowd on top applauds the sunset, which is a genuine local ritual rather than a performance for visitors. Below the rock, a short beach picks up the swell and most of the city's surfers.
It costs nothing and takes an hour, so it becomes part of the daily routine of any Rio stay. Ipanema and Leblon are the natural bases, with Copacabana just over the headland. Winter, from June to August, gives the clearest light and puts the sun down over open sea. Keep to daylight and the early evening, and take nothing you would mind losing.

From our guides
It's a gloriously Carioca ritual: barefoot, beer in hand, samba drifting up from the beach kiosks. Winter, June to August, delivers the sharpest light and the sun setting directly over the sea. Propose during the clapping and the whole beach becomes your witness.

Things to do
-
The sunset applause
People gather on the rock in the last half hour of daylight and clap as the sun drops behind Dois Irmãos, then drift down to the beach kiosks.
-
Praia do Arpoador
The small beach beneath the rock is the city's main surf break, with a lifeguard tower and calmer swimming on the Copacabana side.
-
Ipanema beach
Numbered lifeguard posts divide the sand into distinct social zones, and the stretch around posts nine and ten is the classic one.
-
Parque Garota de Ipanema
The small park on the headland has paths, benches and skate ramps, and it is the calmest route up to the viewpoint.
-
Dois Irmãos
The two peaks closing off Leblon can be walked up from Vidigal with a guide, giving you the reverse of the Arpoador view.
-
Kiosk culture
Coconut water, grilled cheese on a stick and cold beer are sold along the front from morning until well after dark.

Where to stay
Beachfront hotels of every grade in Copacabana and Ipanema, apartment rentals throughout the Zona Sul, and boutique guesthouses in Santa Teresa.
-
Best base overall
Ipanema
Two minutes from the rock, safe to walk in the evening and full of good restaurants and juice bars. It is the most expensive part of the Zona Sul, and rooms are small.
Find stays in Ipanema -
Best with children
Leblon
Ipanema's quieter western neighbour, residential, with playgrounds and calmer beach sections. Less atmosphere at night, and prices match Ipanema.
Find stays in Leblon -
Best value
Copacabana
The other side of Arpoador, with far more hotel rooms and noticeably lower rates. Scruffier and more crowded, and worth choosing a street close to the beachfront.
Find stays in Copacabana -
Best for couples
Santa Teresa
A hill of colonial houses and small guesthouses above the centre, with views and good bars. You will taxi to the beach, and streets are steep and dark at night.
Find stays in Santa Teresa
Worth knowing before you book: New Year and Carnival are booked a year ahead with heavy minimum stays and set-price packages. Ask for a room away from the street if you want to sleep.

Good to know
- Timing
- Arrive around forty minutes before sunset for a place on the rock, and check the time, as it shifts by more than an hour across the year.
- Safety
- Take a phone, a little cash and nothing else. Petty theft is common on the beach and around the headland after dark.
- Getting there
- The metro reaches General Osório in Ipanema, a ten minute walk away, and runs into the evening.
- Crowds
- Weekends and public holidays are packed. Weekday evenings still get the applause with a fraction of the people.
- Pack this
- A light layer for after sunset, when the sea breeze picks up quickly, and something to sit on, as the rock is uneven.
