Why go
A small island lies across a narrow channel from Paros, with one main street of whitewashed houses, a Venetian castle core and a string of gentle sandy beaches on the sheltered side. The scale is the point, since you can walk the town in ten minutes and everyone ends up in the same square by evening. Days go on swimming and shade, nights on a long dinner outdoors.
Three or four nights is right, and it works as an add on to Paros or a wider Cyclades route. Ferries cross in a few minutes and run late through summer. June and September bring warm sea and space, while August fills with Athenian families. The meltemi wind can blow hard for days at a time, which affects the exposed beaches and occasionally the ferries.

From our guides
Antiparos has one main street, a clutch of gentle sandy beaches and a low-key scene that attracts people escaping attention rather than seeking it. Soros is the beach the locals pick; the town's shaded tavernas fill slowly from nine. If you need entertainment there's a vast sea cave — otherwise, the entertainment is dinner.

Things to do
-
Soros beach
A sheltered sandy bay on the east coast that locals rate above the rest, with shallow water and a couple of tavernas set back behind it.
-
The Cave of Antiparos
A large stalactite cave reached by a long flight of steps down, with inscriptions left by visitors going back several centuries.
-
The kastro
The Venetian castle at the centre of town is now a ring of houses around a courtyard, entered through a low arch off the main street.
-
Despotiko
An uninhabited island opposite, where an archaic sanctuary of Apollo is still being excavated, reached by small boat in summer.
-
Sifneiko and Apantima
Two calm beaches facing west and south, which come into their own when the wind is up on the other side of the island.
-
The main street at dusk
Bougainvillea, tables in the road and a slow circuit before dinner. The whole island turns out between eight and ten.

Good to know
- Getting there
- Fly to Paros or Naxos, or take a ferry from Piraeus, then cross on the frequent small ferry from Pounta or Parikia.
- Timing
- Most tavernas and rooms close from late October until Easter. The island is genuinely seasonal.
- Cash or card
- Cards are usual now, but cash machines are few and can empty in August. Carry some euros as backup.
- Pack this
- A windbreak or light layer for the meltemi, and reef shoes, as a few beaches have pebble entries.
- Driving
- A car is unnecessary for the town but useful for the southern beaches. Quad bikes are common and the roads are narrow.
