AlUla
Hegra's Nabataean tombs rise straight out of red sandstone at Saudi Arabia's first UNESCO World Heritage site, and the way in is fixed: a licensed guide, a rawi, on a timed slot booked through Experience AlUla — self-driving between tombs isn't allowed, which is a large part of why the site still feels untouched.

Why go
A long oasis valley in north west Arabia, with date palms on the floor and eroded sandstone rising in blocks and arches on both sides. Nabataean tombs cut into the cliffs at Hegra are the headline, but much of the appeal is simply driving between rock formations at the end of the day, when the stone turns the colour of embers. The old mud brick town adds a second layer of history.
Three or four nights is about right, and it pairs naturally with Riyadh or Jeddah. October to March keeps daytime temperatures reasonable, while summer is punishing. Hegra runs on timed slots with a licensed guide and much of the valley is managed by permit, so plan the order of your days before arriving. Anyone expecting bars, beaches or spontaneous wandering should adjust their expectations.

From our guides
Pair it with Elephant Rock (Jabal AlFil), a 52-metre sandstone arch shaped uncannily like its namesake, best at sunset once the day-trip buses thin out. October to March keeps the desert heat bearable, and Hegra's daily slots are capped, so book ahead.

Things to do
-
Hegra
More than a hundred monumental tombs are carved into sandstone outcrops, visited on a guided timed tour, and quiet in a way Petra no longer manages.
-
Elephant Rock
A 52 metre natural arch shaped uncannily like its namesake, with sunken seating in the sand around it and the best light at sunset.
-
AlUla Old Town
A mud brick settlement of narrow lanes below a hilltop fort, partly restored, with a viewpoint over the palm groves and the valley.
-
Dadan and Jabal Ikmah
The older Dadanite and Lihyanite capital has lion tombs cut high into a cliff, with a nearby canyon covered in ancient inscriptions.
-
Sharaan nature reserve
A protected desert area north of town where ibex, gazelle and other native species are being reintroduced, visited on guided trips.
-
Balloons and dark skies
Hot air balloon flights over the valley and organised stargazing both run through the cooler months, when the air is reliably clear.

Getting around
Hegra can only be visited on a booked tour with a rawi guide, boarding a shuttle bus from the Winter Park visitor centre. Free hop-on buses link the old town, Elephant Rock and the main sites in season; otherwise it is taxis or a hire car.
Public transport: No public network beyond the seasonal visitor shuttles; hotels, tours and ride-hailing cover everything else.

Where to stay
Desert resorts and tented camps at the luxury end, with a growing number of mid-range town hotels. Very few budget options, and no real self-catering market.

Best base overall
AlUla old town area
The heart of the oasis, walking distance from the restored mudbrick town and the main dining strip, with Hegra a short drive north. Everything centres here, and it is where the shuttle buses run from.

Worth knowing before you book: Book Hegra's timed rawi tours through Experience AlUla before you book the room, since daily slots are capped and sell out in the cool months.

Good to know
- Book ahead
- Hegra tickets are capped per day and released on set dates. The good winter slots go quickly.
- Etiquette
- Dress modestly, covering shoulders and knees. Women are not required to wear an abaya, and alcohol is not available anywhere.
- Timing
- Sites open early and many close through the middle of the day in warmer months, so plan for mornings and late afternoons.
- Getting there
- AlUla has its own airport with domestic flights from Riyadh and Jeddah, plus seasonal international services in winter.
- Pack this
- A hat, sunglasses and a genuinely warm layer. Desert nights in winter get close to freezing.
